I took a quick trip to Grand Island, Nebraska area to attempt photos of the Sandhill Cranes on their annual layover before heading north to nest. The reports indicated one of the largest gathering of Sandhill Cranes in mid-March in many years. The Cranes tend to feed in the corn fields during the day and it was a short drive off of Interstate 80 to find dozens or hundreds of Cranes not far from the road. I had reserved a spot in an evening viewing blind through the Crane Trust Nature and Visitor Center near Wood River, NE, to get photos as the birds came in to roost on the Platte river for the night. Unfortunately the lighting was not what I had hoped with a dark, cloudy evening. Also most of the birds flew in to the shallows of the river well after sunset. I got a few pictures, but thoroughly enjoyed the experience of watching and listening to the prehistoric birds as they flew in by the hundreds. I got better photos on a previous trip to Nebraska - http://www.brucegmckeephotos.com/myblog/sandhill-cranes-in-nebraska |
