The Covered Bridge and Night Sky

8/12/2019

A starry night and the covered bridge at Wilkenson Pioneer Park in Rock Falls lit by the bright moonlight. Look above the bridge in the second photo and you can see the Big Dipper. The glow on the horizon is from the moonlight lighting up the ground haze. Not visible this way to the naked eye, but records this way with the long exposure necessary to show the stars in the night sky.

Crescent Moon

The waxing crescent Moon setting tonight. (I think this is the one that the cow jumped over.) Venus was also very bright and close to the Moon in the sky, but I liked the image of the Moon alone better. When the sun hits the moon at an angle it really shows the shadow of the craters.

Full Moon, Prairie Flowers and more

Photo of the Moon and a windmillThe setting Moon (Click to see larger)
I missed the full Moon rising last night (I should put these things on my calendar), so I got up early to see it setting this morning. The moon set at 6:03 AM, so I needed to be out to the spot where I wanted to take a photo of it setting behind a local windmill about an hour earlier. When I went out in the dim twilight there was a clear, cloudless sky, bright moon and I could see clearly where I need to be, but the moon was still too high in the sky to get the photo that I wanted. Then it happened. Out of nowhere a thick fog rolled in across the fields and I could no longer see the windmill, and the moon was hazy. Ugh! Well, I waited around to see what would happen and as the sun came up, the fog did dissipate a little. I got a few photos, but the moon was rapidly fading away as it sank in the the fog. Not the sharp, clear picture of the moon behind the windmill that I had hoped for.

The morning was not a total disappointment. In the road ditch where I was standing to take pictures of the moon there were many wild prairie flowers blooming, Monarch butterflies flitting from flower to flower, and I got a photo of a Dickcissel singing on a fence post. Lightning over Lake Superior

Lightning over Lake Superior at Grand Marais, MN on a June moonlit night. Multiple 8-second exposures blended in Photoshop. After taking some sunset photos of the lighthouse (below) and  waiting for the northern lights which never appeared, I was heading south to find a place to sleep before taking some sunrise photos. I looked in the rear-view mirror and saw a couple of lightning flashes and turned around back to a lake view of the storm. Setting up the camera on the tripod with an intervalometer set to take continuous 8 second exposures, I took photos of the storm moving across the lake for about 45 minutes.
The sailboat and lighthouse photos below were taken earlier in the evening at Grand Marais with a rain shower on the horizon. [Click the photos below to see larger.]

Full Moon Rising

Picture
Full-frame camera, 700mm lens, ISO 800, f5.6, 1/125sec., cropped slightly. This is a single exposure - not a composite photo. The windmill was about 1/4 mile away.
The full Moon rising on the Summer Solstice. The full moon in June is also called the 'Strawberry Moon', for the first time since 1967 coinciding with the solstice.  I like old windmills and I've been planning this image for a long, long time and finally it all came together tonight - the full moon, very clear sky to the east, the moon rising in just the right spot so that I can get to a place to line up the camera, windmill, background and moon. I use the Photo Pills app on my phone to find he exact time and location to stand.
When the moon is overhead the light is passing through abut 10 or 12 miles of atmosphere. However, when it is rising or setting it is at an oblique angle and passing through hundreds of miles of atmosphere. This causes the light from the moon to refract in the atmosphere making it look much larger than when overhead, changing the shape slightly, giving the moon a warm color and not as clear or distinct in detail because of the light passing through so much of the atmosphere. Telephoto lenses also have the characteristic of causing objects in the distance to appear much larger in relation to foreground objects.

Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse

The Blood Moon (click to see larger)
It was a cool and absolutely clear night for watching and photographing the 'super-moon' on the night of September 27, 2015 as the shadow of the earth passed over the moon creating a total lunar eclipse. It is a super-moon because in the moon's elliptical orbit around the earth the moon is at its closest point making it about 7-8% larger. Because of the orange or reddish color while in the total eclipse it is also called the 'blood moon' - which lasted for over an hour. The sequence above are random photos taken with a 500mm lens over the 3 1/2 hour period from 8:07 PM until 11:27 PM CDT. The individual photos were then assembled in to a composite in PhotoShop.

Super Moon and a Lone Tree

Super Moon and a Lone Tree

I drive by this tree nearly every day. It stands alone in an old fence row, this year among soy beans and other years among corn, its brethren trees long ago removed to make way for larger farm equipment. It stands alone. I wonder why this lone tree was spared? I have often thought that it would be great to share a sunrise or moon-rise with this tree. How many has it seen? How many sunsets or moon sets? It soaks up the sun, the rain, the sleet and snow, all alone, among the beans or corn. On this clear, cool September eve', I joined it in watching the full super-moon as it slid out of the horizon on its arc across the clear night sky. We watched together, that tree and I. Its spindly branches seemed to be reaching, touching, caressing the moon, an old friend, as it passed in to the night to shine down from above.  We'll meet again some day, but for now, I am glad that we could share this moment together.
