I've been trying for years to get a close up photo of a Pileated Woodpecker, with little success. They just don't like to hang around when a guy with a camera and a telephoto lens shows up. But I got lucky last week at the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Sanibel Island, FL. The visitor center has a second story outside balcony access to the restrooms. I came out of the restroom and heard the calling first and then saw that there were two Pileated Woodpeckers in a tree - right at eye level from the balcony, and....I had my camera with me. I was able to take pictures for several minutes while they pecked on the tree branches searching for bugs. What a thrill. |
