Beemer's Pond (see map) west of Webster City, Iowa has the largest population of wintering Trumpeter Swans in the state. I spent an early morning and late afternoon there and counted at least 260 swans, but I believe that there were more. There were also hundreds of Canada Geese and many Mallard ducks. Trumpeter Swans look similar to Tundra Swans but are larger with a 60 inch wing-span and can be easily distinguished by their call. The photos at the pond were taken before or slightly after sunrise. The flying photos in the late afternoon just before sunset. [Click an image to see larger in a slide show.] |
